Each week I’m seeing so many things to cherish, but I don’t have a camera or even my cell phone with me all the time. I was seriously considering grabbing the camera (which would have meant leaving a dirty diaper to deal with later, among other things demanding my attention) so that I could snap a quick shot of the G.I. Joe figures my kids were decorating the stair railings with. Somehow, they managed to wrap the arms and legs in just the right way to have the action figures stay on the railings, as if climbing trees or sliding down poles. The G.I. Joes have also been hanging from the autumn leaf garland draped along the mantle…
But as I said, I don’t always have my camera or phone nearby. But, Fence ever-so-stealthily snapped this one of me reading to our oldest son last night. We read nearly every night, and sometimes I’m honestly so tired I’d rather not, but it is a cherished time for the kids, and I enjoy it, too. In some ways, I’m looking forward to the cold days of winter, when we won’t spend all afternoon and many evenings outside, but will have longer stretches for reading together more. Then we will choose exciting family read-alouds, delight our imaginations, and bit by bit build memories on these ordinary moments.

I just love this! I try to be faithful with read aloud time, but during the summer it’s usually limited to picture books since, like you mentioned, there’s less cozy couch time happening and it takes us three months to finish a chapter of anything! What are you reading?
Too funny about the GI Joe figures 🙂 It’s so sweet when little glimpses of “life with kids” like that turn up around the house!
The book in the picture is a Magic School Bus chapter book. I need to get a new family read-aloud going ASAP…but with my 8yr old we’re working through Harry Potter.
