Story Behind the Holy Water Sticker

“Get some holy water on your way out!” she cheerfully commanded. Maybe not commanded so much as strongly encouraged. My friend L is good at that; cheerfully and confidently lifting me up and challenging me to live a more full spiritual life.

I dipped my finger in her font but it was nearly dry. No problem, L had a small glass jam jar filled with holy water from her church. She poured some in her font, I dipped and crossed myself, and left for home.

Holy water is a sacramental. “Sacramentals are sacred signs instituted by the Church. They prepare men to receive the fruit of the sacraments and sanctify different circumstances of life.”

Catechism of the catholic church, 1677

The idea for a holy water sticker

My mind spun with ideas on the way home.

  • One: I need to get some holy water and a font in my home (still need a font).
  • Two: L’s repurposed jar was brilliant. A year or so ago, I purchased a beautiful glass holy water bottle, only to have my youngest son drop it. I was so upset about the broken bottle and the money I’d lost.
  • Three: repurposing small jam or mason jars is so easy and very affordable–aka free–for families.
  • Four: what if I designed a small sticker that could dress up those repurposed jars?

That’s it. L uses a jam jar, and I thought of designing a sweet little clear sticker to label old jam jars for their new use holding holy water. It’s the ordinary things. We really can bring an element of the holy into the smallest of details.

Months after that inspiration, here is that sticker! Thanks for the inspiration, L. <3

I hope you love the holy water sticker, and begin to use holy water in your own home.
