What I Read in 2014

Sometimes I feel like I never finish a single book, and there are just piles of unfinished books all over the house…

It’s true. There are piles of books in my room and the living room and the school room, full of books I have started and not yet finished reading. Le sigh.

But, I have finished a few books. Maybe even more than a few! I’m joining the party with Haley at Carrots for Michaelmas and listing out all I did read this year. Maybe I’ll be so bold as to share what I plan to read for next year, too!

What-I-Read-in-2014-1024x602

Finished:
Harry Potter, books 6 and 7 by J.K. Rowling
Something Other Than God by Jennifer Fulwiler
The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare
The Little Oratory By Leila Lawler
Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler’s Guide To Unshakeable Peace
33 Days to Morning Glory by Fr. Michael Gaitley
The Miraculous Medal: Stories, Prayers and Devotions by Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle

Started but didn’t finish:
The Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson
The Grace of Yes
by Lisa Hendey

Five Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter
Saint John Paul II the Great
Parenting with Love and Logic by Foster Cline and Jim Fay
Worthy by Amanda Mortus

Now…what should I read in 2015? Already on my list are some books from my wish list, as well as finishing what I started this year and didn’t yet finish.
How to Sew a Button and Other Nifty Things Your Grandmother Knew by Erin Bried
Holy Women by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

Love and Responsibility by Karol Wojtyla
Beyond the Birds and Bees by Greg and Lisa Popcak
A Book of Saints for Catholic Women by Lisa Hendey
The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn
Hail, Holy Queen by Scott Hahn
Graced and Gifted: Biblical Wisdom for the Homemaker’s Heart by Kimberly Hahn
Walking with God by Tim Gray and Jeff Cavins

I’m considering some Jane Austen…any suggestions on which I should begin with? I think I read Emma in high school, but my memory could be fooling me. Also, any light reads that I can enjoy but not spend forever reading? Clearly my list needs some rounding-out with some non-fiction.

What are *you* reading next year? What was your favorite read this year?

  1. My recommendations!

A Mother’s Rule Of Life- can’t remember the author’s name right now- great guide for mothers. A “rule of life” to follow, as other vocations have rules, so should we.

St. Gemma Galgani, by her spiritual director- this saint I give credit to for bringing me into serious return to God, even though I grew up Catholic, she nudged me back onto a serious path.

Any of Louis de Whol’s books on saints- historical novels- great page turners- (Restless Flame on St. Augustine, or The Quiet Light, on St. Thomas Aquinas- church library).
Right now I’m reading his book on St. Fracis Xavier.

Jane Austen- oh yes, by all means, for some light and happy reading, start with Pride and Predjudice.

Any of the Bronte books- Jane Eyre for starters.

The Life of Mother Angelica (by Raymond Arroyo)- it’s remarkeable what that woman has accomplished thorugh God.

  2. I read Jennifer Fulwilers book as well! I also really enjoyed “he Leadeth me” about a priest in Siberian slave camp. I am reading Montessori book right now (absorbent mind) and also Kristin Lavransdatter. Lots of unfinished books here 🙂 my 2015 books would be little oratory, Joan of arc (mark twain) the faithful departed, and joy of the gospel, maybe more! you’re always welcome to come over and borrow!

  3. I’m totally adding some Scott Hahn to my list now, thanks for reminding me! Can’t wait to start HP too.

Agree that P&P is the definitely the most readable and fastest-moving Jane Austen book. As much as I love her, some of the others (I’m thinking Emma, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey) I’ve found a little slow and tedious at points, and it’s taken me a few weeks at a time to get through each. P&P on the other hand I can zip through in a day or two and I have to restrain myself from re-reading it too often 😉
